Pep Chavarria was handpicked by Xabi Alonso as Chelsea\u2019s new left-back signing, however needs to show improvement in his attacking numbers to suitably replace Marc Cucurella.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Blues have spent plenty of money on their defence this summer, with Marco Palestra<\/a> impressing throughout pre-season and Maxence Lacroix<\/a> bringing Premier League experience.<\/p>\n

To many Chelsea fans though, Chavarria is a bit of an unknown quantity, joining for a comparatively low fee from Rayo Vallecano.<\/p>\n

Pep Chavarria needs to improve his attacking numbers at Chelsea<\/h2>\n

The left-back has admitted he joined to play under Alonso<\/a>, who after pre-season is expected to start the Blues in a back three when Premier League action comes around at last.<\/p>\n

This will see Chavarria in an advanced role, although looking at his numbers he will need to show improvement in the attacking areas of the pitch.<\/p>\n

In 105 La Liga games, the 28-year-old has registered just six assists, only two more than Alejandro Garnacho<\/a> managed in his one season at Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n

He also has just two goals, suggesting he is not going to have a Marcos Alonso-style impact in the wing-back role, which found so much success during Antonio Conte\u2019s title-winning campaign.<\/p>\n

Chavarria also only averages 0.5 crosses per game, which would not be enough to get the most out of either Joao Pedro<\/a> or Danny Welbeck in the penalty area.<\/p>\n

Chavarria facing battle to become a Chelsea starter<\/h2>\n

It looks like the Spaniard will be competing with Palestra to start the opening Premier League game against Fulham.<\/p>\n

The Italian has proven a favourite to Alonso during pre-season, playing on both sides of defence, although it looks like he cracked the code in their victory over AC Milan.<\/p>\n

Pedro Neto<\/a> started that game on the right of the back five, with his work-rate being a key reason why he has made the transition so seamlessly.<\/p>\n

Chavarria may have to bide his time before he gets his chance as a starting player, although will be afforded the time to develop his attacking skillset to become a suitable replacement for Cucurella.<\/p>\n
