Former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday has defended the new Gers manager amid his winless start at Ibrox, accusing the club’s hierarchy of “gross mismanagement”.<\/p>\n

The pressure has increased on McInnes and his players after they extended their winless run to four games, crashing out of the Europa League<\/a> to Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok.<\/p>\n

McInnes reflected on a disappointing result in the Europa League<\/span>

But Halliday, who spent five seasons at Ibrox, does not think the blame lies with the manager.<\/p>\n

“He’s trying to find a formula, he’s trying to find a solution, he’s trying to find players that he trusts. Whether that’s personnel or whether that’s shape and he’s really scratching the surface,” he told Sky Sports News.<\/em><\/p>\n

“You look at the balance of the squad and there’s a real lack of pace, a real lack of creativity, no one that can dictate the tempo of a game.<\/p>\n

“Derek McInnes is doing the best that he possibly can with what’s at his disposal to try and get results. At this moment in time, he’s not found that solution.”<\/p>\n

Rangers have made nine new signings this summer, while a deal for \u00a36.5m for PSV winger Couhaib Driouech <\/strong>was called off after an injury was picked up during his medical.<\/p>\n

While fans have raised concerns about player recruitment, chairman Andrew Cavenagh defended the work in that department at a shareholder Q&A<\/a>, adding he believes the squad is better than it was 12 months ago.<\/p>\n

But despite that, Halliday believes the issues are continuing to come from the top.<\/p>\n

“A gross level of mismanagement,” he added when asked about the club’s incoming players.<\/p>\n

“If you’ve signed 27 players in the space of 12 months, then you’ve got so many decisions wrong.<\/p>\n

“It is quite incredible that we’ve allowed this to take place. Only one left-back in the door, three centre-halves, only two wingers, a whole host of central-midfield players that all kind of fit the same profile.<\/p>\n

“So they’re right in saying they still need more players, but it has to be players that are an immediate upgrade on what they currently have, or it’s obviously going to be a long season.<\/p>\n

“They need an upgrade, and I think it’s hard to say they’ve done that.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
