Mike Penders is expected to start in goal for Chelsea against Brighton on Sunday, with the Belgian having a chance to put an end to a tough record caused by Robert Sanchez.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sanchez<\/a> has seemingly lost his place in Xabi Alonso\u2019s<\/a> plans following his nightmare performance against Fulham on Monday, with Penders<\/a> starting against Luton in the EFL Cup.<\/p>\n

With the signing of Emi Martinez<\/a> not yet announced by the club, the young Belgian looks as if he will get his first opportunity in the Premier League against a side who have had Chelsea\u2019s number of late.<\/p>\n

Mike Penders can put an end to 35-year low during Chelsea vs Brighton<\/h2>\n

The Seagulls have been regular goalscorers against the Blues, and in fact it has been a long time since Chelsea<\/a> kept a Premier League clean sheet in general.<\/p>\n

For 17 league games in a row, the Blues have conceded, with Sanchez in goal for nearly all of these matches.<\/p>\n

This is the longest consecutive run Chelsea have been on without a clean sheet since 1991, with them not having a run longer since 1961.<\/p>\n

Penders has the chance to make a name for himself early into his Stamford Bridge career by putting an end to this run, putting himself into the manager\u2019s thinking for the rest of the season.<\/p>\n

Alonso has been bullish in his personal demands to sign a new goalkeeper<\/a> this summer, despite the club originally being happy with the options they had available.<\/p>\n

Emi Martinez signing doesn\u2019t signal the end for Mike Penders<\/h2>\n

The addition of Martinez will originally be a blow to the Belgian, with the Argentine set to instantly become a starter in West London.<\/p>\n

However, given his age he has to be considered more of a stop-gap option for the Blues, keeping Penders at the forefront of their thinking for the long-term future.<\/p>\n

Chelsea are expected to part ways with a goalkeeper<\/a> when Martinez signs, however it looks as if Penders will be exempt from this.<\/p>\n

Sanchez is going to be out of Chelsea\u2019s plans from this point onwards, and he could easily be on the move before the window comes to a close on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
