The summer transfer window may have closed the new signings on September 1, but Chelsea have contacted a free agent to try and bolster their numbers in midfield.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Blues parted ways with Enzo Fern\u00e1ndez<\/a> in the final hours of the summer, however, were unable to get a late replacement over the line.<\/p>\n

This came as a result of Monaco pulling the plug on a deal to sign Lamine Camara<\/a>, despite Chelsea believing everything was in order.<\/p>\n

Clubs are still able to sign free agents despite the window being closed, and Chelsea have seemingly eyed up Georginio Wijnaldum as a potential option for them.<\/p>\n

As per Santi Aouna<\/a>, Chelsea have been in contact with the Dutchman in regards to a possible move to Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cLooking for a midfielder, Chelsea has contacted Georginio Wijnaldum in the past few hours, who is a free agent.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 35-year-old has been in talks to leave Al-Ettifaq throughout the summer, with a move to MLS being touted at one stage.<\/p>\n

However, he may now find himself having the chance to return to one of Europe\u2019s biggest clubs as an emergency option to play in midfield.<\/p>\n

Moises Caicedo<\/a>, Romeo Lavia and Reece James are expected to play the brunt of the minutes in the middle of the park this season, but past them options are looking thin.<\/p>\n

Wijnaldum would certainly bring Premier League experience with him to Stamford Bridge, having been featured regularly for Liverpool under former manager Jurgen Klopp.<\/p>\n

This was some time ago though, and it remains to be seen as to whether he can make a meaningful contribution to a side pushing to return to the Champions League.<\/p>\n

Chelsea are expected to be in the market for a new permanent midfielder from as early as January. Adam Wharton and Alex Scott dominated their shortlists<\/a> this summer.<\/p>\n

Both were deemed too important to their current clubs at the late stages of the window, however Chelsea will fancy their luck when they get another opportunity.<\/p>\n
