Cole Palmer’s outstanding form this season has put him in a strong position for an England recall, with the Chelsea man the most likely to be included from all the big names left out of the World Cup squad.<\/p>\n

Palmer, along with Phil Foden<\/strong> and Trent Alexander-Arnold<\/strong>, was a headline omission from Thomas Tuchel’s tournament squad in May, but he is one of the most startlingly in-form players in the Premier League right now, and the smart money is on him winning his international place back.<\/p>\n

In the hugely oversubscribed No 10 role, the England boss went with Jude Bellingham<\/strong>, Morgan Rogers <\/strong>and Eberechi Eze<\/strong> in May, but Palmer is now fully fit after groin problems limited him to just 26 appearances last season, and his form has flourished.<\/p>\n

Two goals and two assists show that. Only his team-mate Joao Pedro has more in the Premier League so far this season and only Bruno Fernandes has created more chances and had more shots combined (25) than Palmer (24).<\/p>\n

It also feels like a space may have opened up for Palmer, with Eze’s indifferent form for Arsenal. While starting in Europe and the Carabao Cup, Eze has yet to start in the Premier League so far this season.<\/p>\n

Morgan Gibbs-White<\/strong> is in with a shout, after an impressive start to the campaign. But Tuchel constantly talks about “connections” between players as the key to England’s success, and right now it is hard to argue there is a better attacking connection in the Premier League than Palmer and his close friend Rogers. There certainly is not an all-English one.<\/p>\n

Will Tuchel try to change England ‘DNA’?<\/h3>\n

This squad selection will be the first staging post in Tuchel’s brave new post-World Cup era. Having stated publicly that England’s DNA does not allow for ball-retaining passers, can he continue to leave Palmer, Foden and Alexander-Arnold in exile – three generational talents in terms of their passing and attacking prowess?<\/p>\n

The issue here is that Tuchel is not a man to admit he was wrong. Like many, if not all, of the very best coaches in the world, there is an in-built self-belief – an arrogance, some would say – which is very hard to shake. It is partly what gives him his aura.<\/p>\n

And if Tuchel does recall one of those big three, does that show the mask is slipping? Plenty in the media will pounce and take it as proof that the England boss got it wrong on the biggest stage when he named his World Cup squad three months ago. But he will also be criticised if he leaves those superstars out again. It is a lose-lose.<\/p>\n

Despite his sending off in the Manchester derby last weekend, Foden has started the season in fine form. He leads the Premier League in assists after a ball carry (2), alongside Cody Gakpo and Julio Enciso. And of all the English players at Tuchel’s disposal, he is probably the most technically adept with the ball at his feet. It remains to be seen whether Foden fits into the England plans right now.<\/p>\n

Issues in defence<\/h3>\n

Alexander-Arnold may struggle to force his way back in, despite the glaring right-back issues Tuchel faced at the World Cup. Reece James<\/strong> and Tino Livramento <\/strong>both suffered injuries, leaving many to lament the Real Madrid star’s absence, especially when centre-back Trevoh Chalobah<\/strong> was called up as a late replacement for Livramento instead.<\/p>\n

But Tuchel has been adamant that the former Liverpool full-back’s profile does not suit how he wants his England side to play, and it would be a big shift in the manager’s philosophy if he went back on that now.<\/p>\n

Alexander-Arnold has started only two LaLiga games this season, yet he has managed more successful crosses than all but two defenders in the league (6).<\/p>\n

Tuchel knows top-quality delivery comes standard with Alexander-Arnold, but the manager has always thought defensive prowess matters more.<\/p>\n

Tuchel does have something of a defensive crisis. The absences of John Stones<\/strong>, Dan Burn<\/strong>, Djed Spence<\/strong> and Ben White<\/strong> due to injury mean there are plenty of opportunities at the back. James has also missed Chelsea training this week, but has not been ruled out.<\/p>\n

Despite those doubts, it still feels unlikely that Harry Maguire<\/strong> will get the nod for an international recall. Speaking out in frustration about his World Cup omission – the day before Tuchel publicly named the squad – was not well received by the England hierarchy.<\/p>\n

The 33-year-old has been ever-present and impressive in Manchester United’s four league games so far this season. He is currently ranked third in the Premier League for ball-carrying.<\/p>\n

Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall<\/strong> – another controversial omission from the World Cup squad – is expected to get the chance this time in the Nations League. His consistency is clear and he has been excellent again this season – the best in the Premier League for winning possession in the defensive third (19 times) and fifth for successful blocks (5).<\/p>\n

Whether Maguire’s United team-mate Kobbie Mainoo<\/strong> is included in this Nations League squad remains to be seen. He did not play a minute of football at the World Cup<\/a>, and was thoroughly disillusioned by the end.<\/p>\n

Sky Sports News<\/em> expected him to be selected for the third-place play-off match, but back pain developed in the final training session before the game, ruling him out. Nevertheless, his form for Manchester United so far has made him a strong England candidate.<\/p>\n

Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin<\/strong> is pushing hard for a recall after an explosive start to the season. His double against Newcastle on Monday means it is four goals in six games so far.<\/p>\n

It is form Tuchel cannot ignore, especially since Calvert-Lewin’s main rival Ollie Watkins<\/strong> is now playing in the Saudi Pro League. Watkins’ move to Al Hilal has seen him start in sparkling form, however, with three goals and two assists in four appearances.<\/p>\n

Ivan Toney<\/strong>, who was the surprise inclusion at the World Cup, is unlikely to be considered for selection this time. He is due to be in court in Westminster in the middle of the international break to answer charges of assault causing actual bodily harm. His lawyer says he is looking forward to the opportunity to clear his name.<\/p>\n

Despite the excitement around Max Dowman’s <\/strong>performances for Arsenal and his two goals in the Carabao Cup win over Ipswich, no one expects an early call-up to the senior squad. The 16-year-old has not yet played for England’s U21s, which is a more likely route as the FA, similarly to Mikel Arteta, carefully manage his minutes and his progression.<\/p>\n

Dean Henderson<\/strong> has a foot injury, meaning there is space for a third goalkeeper to be called up alongside the guaranteed Jordan Pickford<\/strong> and James Trafford<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
