Chelsea\u2019s pursuit of a new midfielder left them with two realistic options on the final day of the window, after cashing in on Enzo Fernandez. They ended the summer without a replacement.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier in the summer, Chelsea<\/a> did bring in Valentin Barco and Jordan Henderson, and at least that has provided some depth. But quality is lacking without Fernandez, even if a more defensive option is needed.<\/p>\n

Lamine Camara was the one that look destined to join, but Monaco pulled the plug. There was interest in Fulham\u2019s Norway international Sander Berge, while David Ornstein says Chelsea were close to Manu Kone<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Any chance of Chelsea returning for Kone looks unlikely<\/h2>\n

During the summer, Roma needed a sale, and Kone was considered to bring some cash in at the Olimpico. But the France World Cup star has stayed despite Chelsea\u2019s attempts to bring him to London.<\/p>\n

If Chelsea were going to sign him, a fee of around \u00a350m was expected to change hands. But now Roma want a whole lot more, with Corriere Dello Sport<\/a> reporting that Roma have increased their price tag.<\/p>\n

It is claimed that Roma now want a whopping \u20ac<\/strong>100m [\u00a386m] for Kone, a player who would have been the ideal summer signing. Patrick Vieira recently said that he\u2019s France\u2019s best midfielder<\/a> at the World Cup.<\/p>\n

Now, he\u2019ll cost two-thirds of the fee Chelsea received from Man City and ultimately, Chelsea have missed the chance to sign a brilliant midfielder \u2013 one that Kylian Mbappe is a big fan of<\/a> \u2013 for a bargain \u00a350m.<\/p>\n

Kone makes more sense than Alex Scott<\/h2>\n

If Chelsea fans could sign anyone, it would be Bournemouth\u2019s Alex Scott. Chelsea had a \u00a364m bid turned down<\/a> for the England midfielder in the summer, and interest remains with his contract expiring in 2028.<\/p>\n

But Scott is a playmaker. Alonso\u2019s 3-4-2-1 system incorporates Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers in two 10 roles, and that requires two defensive midfielders to cover them and the wing-backs when attacking.<\/p>\n

Scott is a quality player, and his ability to play as a deep-lying playmaker might work. But bringing in a defensive-minded midfielder like Kone, Camara or Berge would make more sense in Alonso\u2019s system.<\/p>\n
