Enzo Fernandez was back at Cobham on Tuesday for the first time since the end of the 2025-26 season. Immediately, reports resurfaced regarding his future as a Chelsea player.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over the last few months, Fernandez<\/a> and his agent Javier Pastore have been desperately attempting to force through a move from Chelsea<\/a> to Real Madrid. That is no longer on the table for the Argentine.<\/p>\n

Since Real Madrid\u2019s statement, things have died down somewhat. But a reunion with Enzo Maresca at Man City remains a possibility,<\/a> and within 24 hours of his return to Cobham, reports emerged again.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, it boils down to this. If a club meets Chelsea\u2019s asking price of \u00a3120m for Fernandez<\/a>, the Blues will allow him to leave. If not, he stays. It is only right that Chelsea start compiling a list of replacements.<\/p>\n

The ideal, realistic replacement for Enzo Fernandez<\/h2>\n

If Chelsea could go out and sign any attacking midfielder who scores goals from deep, but also plays a role in transition. One that can do a bit of everything, a leader \u2013 they\u2019d sign Vitinha or Dominik Szoboszlai.<\/p>\n

Obviously, that isn\u2019t happening. But Chelsea do have more realistic options \u2013 Bournemouth\u2019s Alex Scott remains a target,<\/a> for example. According to the stats, however, Barcelona\u2019s Fermin Lopez<\/a> is perfect.<\/p>\n

The stats are proof of that. Comparing their league form from 2025-26, it is quite clear that while Lopez is slightly more attacking than Fernandez, he is still more than capable of the defensive side of the game.<\/p>\n

The similarity between the duo\u2019s stats is remarkable. Clearly, Lopez has more of an attacking presence; that may be because he plays for Barcelona \u2013 with Barca constantly dominating possession and territory.<\/p>\n

But Lopez is more than adept at doing the defensive side of the game. More than 50% ground duel wins, and the stats say he makes more tackles and interceptions than Fernandez does every 90 minutes.<\/p>\n

Why Lopez is a realistic signing despite signing a new contract<\/h2>\n

In January, Lopez signed a new deal at Barcelona under Hansi Flick. A reward for the Spain international, who then fractured his foot at the end of last season, costing him his place in Spain\u2019s World Cup squad.<\/p>\n

The contract boasts a \u00a3450m release clause. But Lopez remains a realistic addition because of Barcelona\u2019s financial issues. Lopez represents pure profit for Barcelona as a La Masia academy product.<\/p>\n

Then, there is the midfield competition at the Nou Camp: Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Casad\u00f3, and Marc Bernal. Lopez starts games, but he is not a key player like favourites Pedri and Gavi.<\/p>\n

How close did Chelsea come to signing Lopez last summer?<\/h2>\n

Chelsea have had Lopez on their radar for years<\/a>, perhaps already planning ahead of Fernandez\u2019s exit. Last summer, the Blues made a \u00a335m offer for Lopez and were hopeful of agreeing a move with Barcelona.<\/p>\n

Reports at the time said Chelsea were willing to do everything within their power to convince Lopez<\/a> of a move to West London. It didn\u2019t emerge, with Lopez saying he always wanted to remain at Barcelona.<\/p>\n

Given Lopez\u2019s impressive 2025-26 form and his new contract, Chelsea will have to pay a lot more than last summer\u2019s \u00a335m fee. If Chelsea do sell Fernandez, Barcelona will know that the Blues have money to use.<\/p>\n

If Chelsea were to commit half of the Fernandez fee on Lopez, should the Argentine be sold, then it is a move that suits all. Barca get a premium price, Chelsea get the ideal replacement and save money, too.<\/p>\n
