Chelsea fans urge Xabi Alonso to re-sign free agent after latest injury blow
Xabi Alonso has had to deal with far more than his fair share of injuries since being appointed Chelsea manager, and the latest blow has convinced fans to urge the Spaniard to re-sign a former winger.
Jamie Gittens is the latest in a long list of Chelsea players to suffer an injury this season. The winger, who has failed to feature in any of Chelsea’s five Premier League games, was seen on crutches this week.
It comes after starting England U21s’ 4-2 win over Kazakhstan. The winger lasted just 39 minutes before Lee Carsley withdrew the former Dortmund star, with Carsley confirming Gittens suffered an ankle injury.

Gittens is the latest injury issue Alonso will now be forced to deal with. Cole Palmer, Marco Palestra, Reece James, Joao Pedro and Moises Caicedo did not link up with their countries during the international break.
Despite Gittens’ lack of game time under Alonso, the injury leaves Chelsea rather light on the left flank. That has prompted some Chelsea fans to take to social media and urge the club to sign Jadon Sancho.

Sancho remains a free agent after his contract at Man United had come to an end, following loan spells with Chelsea and Aston Villa. No club has yet decided to take a chance on the England international.
But Chelsea fans like Sancho after his role during the 2024-25 season. One fan suggested re-signing the former Man City man on a free deal: “Now that Gittens is injured, Sancho free transfer maybe”.
Another posted: “With Jamie Gittens Out, Chelsea fans hear me out… Cheeky one-season deal for Jadon Sancho as Rogers cover until the end of the season.” Clearly, Chelsea fans would welcome Sancho back.
“I wouldn’t mind Sancho, to be honest; he connects with Palmer, and also he can be backup for the twin 10s”, and: “I have always liked Sancho”, were more responses to the news that Gittens has got injured.
Another summed up the situation: “That would be a very nice bargain if Gittens has a long-term injury; we should bring Sancho for one season to cover for Rogers, that would be very nice.”
The Sancho situation, Chelsea registration, and his Blues stats
Sancho is likely to be one of the most-coveted free agents out there at the moment, but the England wide man rejected a move to Russian side Krasnodar recently. Raheem Sterling also remains a free agent.
There are two factors that would allow Chelsea to sign a free agent. The first is that Sancho was made a free agent before the end of the window, which in this case, did happen after his United deal expired.
But the second is that Chelsea could only register him if they had a space in their 25-man squad. At the moment, they do not – and registered players can only be unregistered when the transfer window opens.
Emergency changes are allowed, but they are only provided when there is a severe number of injuries – most likely in goal. Chelsea have plenty of attacking options aside from Gittens, making that very unlikely.
But Sancho is fondly remembered by Chelsea fans, having had a hand in 15 goals in 41 appearances for Chelsea during the 24-25 season. He was key to the Conference League win; he could become an option.
