When Chelsea are likely to make contact with Abdukodir Khusanov’s agent

Last week, it was reported that Chelsea have added Khusanov to their shortlist ahead of the January transfer window. He started City’s first three Premier League games this season but was an unused substitute in the last two.

It may not be long before Chelsea get to work on a deal to sign Khusanov. Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that the Blues are likely to make contact with the player’s agent “soon”.

It may take some convincing to get Khusanov to move to Stamford Bridge, though. It is thought that Khusanov is not currently pushing to leave City.

Whatever the case, there is still a long way to go before the January transfer window opens. For now, Xabi Alonso will have to be content with Lacroix, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana and Josh Acheampong.

On paper, they are not bad options, while Jorrel Hato can also play in central defence. However, Chelsea have conceded 12 goals in just five games this season, which is the most in the Premier League.

Abdukodir Khusanov would be a good signing for Chelsea

Khusanov actually made his debut for City against Chelsea back in the 2024/25 season but did not look convincing at all. He was quite shaky on the day and was at fault for Chelsea’s opener.

Since then, though, Khusanov has really improved and become quite a solid Premier League defender. The Uzbekistan international has real aggression, which most of Chelsea’s other defenders really lack.

According to WhoScored, he is currently making 2.7 tackles per game in the Premier League, which is the highest average in Enzo Maresca’s squad. If Chelsea can move on Fofana or are forced to sell Acheampong, Khusanov could be the ideal replacement for either and slot in perfectly on the right side of Alonso’s back three.
