The issue with a loan-to-buy deal is that the parent club risks not winning a permanent figure. Chelsea will have known that, and yet Clearlake look set to miss out on a £23m clause.
Chelsea might have been able to secure fees for the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Marc Cucurella, Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson, but there were some players they were unable to cash in on and had to loan out.
Axel Disasi, Robert Sanchez, Alejandro Garnacho, for example. There is real concern that the previously believed, easily met conditional obligation included in Garnacho’s loan won’t be met. Now, another issue.
Benoit Badiashile looks set to cost Chelsea a £23m fee
Badiashile was shipped out on loan with Max Allegri’s Napoli landing the Frenchman. It seemed a bit of a strange move from the outset, with the feeling that Badiashile would struggle to get game time at Napoli.

Chelsea loaned Badiashile to Napoli for a £2.5m loan fee, little under £1m more in add-ons, and then a permanent fee worth £23m. But Badiashile’s debut was horrendous, as Inter secured a 3-2 comeback.
According to Corriere Dello Sport – as per Sport Witness – Allegri is unconvinced by the on-loan defender. Allegri hoped Badiashile would be a key player, but his sub outing against Inter is his only appearance.
Chelsea look set to be stuck with Badiashile for a while
Unless Badiashile pulls off what looks like a miracle and becomes a key player for Napoli over the next nine months, he will return to Chelsea, and the permanent £23m fee evaporates into thin air.
Badiashile has a contract at Chelsea until the summer of 2030. By next summer, he will have three more years on his Blues deal. It looks like, as things stand, that Chelsea will be stuck with Badiashile for a while.
Chelsea were always going to struggle to get Badiashile’s permanent fee; it felt unlikely from the outset. Now, the facts are that Allegri is waking up to that doubt, and Badiashile needs a lot of luck to go his way.
