Jarell Quansah is the perfect signing for Xabi Alonso at Chelsea for one clear reason

The Blues are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements, in particular players who are suited to playing in the Spaniard’s style. So far this season, that has revolved around a three-at-the-back system.

Quansah operated as part of a back three for Leverkusen last season, looking most comfortable playing on the right of the three centre-backs. The England international has now been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with his future in Germany uncertain.

Crucially though, he has been playing for the side which Alonso was formerly the manager of, who have still been using a number of the ideas he brought the club so much success with before.

The Bundesliga side have the same ideas when it comes to recruitment with Simon Rolfes remaining in the role of Sporting Director, and players who have gained experience playing in this style will already hold an advantage when it comes to making an impact for Alonso’s Chelsea.

Quansah never actually played under Alonso at Leverkusen, however spending time playing in the system which carried on after the Spaniard’s departure will be a great help for the Blues.

Currently, Maxence Lacroix is the only centre-back who looks comfortable playing in a back three. Josh Acheampong is still at a stage of his career where he is learning first team football, let alone playing in a brand new system.

Alonso clearly has an admiration for Acheampong’s ability, although at his age he has plenty of time to learn the role while playing a supporting role.

Quansah has made a real impression on Thomas Tuchel during recent England camps, and will no doubt have the same impact on the current Chelsea boss too.
