Xabi Alonso elected to go into the 2026/27 season without Alejandro Garnacho as part of his plans at Chelsea, sending him on loan to Aston Villa.

Garnacho didn’t even get the chance to appear in pre-season for Alonso’s side before he was moved on, with the Blues preferring to push forward with the club-record signing of Morgan Rogers.

Now, Chelsea sit in a position where they may not receive the permanent fee for Garnacho from Villa, with him yet to start a Premier League game for his new side.

You can have TWO Man City players, who are you picking and why? 👀

Imagine if Man City actually get relegated 😳

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink gives Alejandro Garnacho verdict

This creates the realistic possibility that the Argentine will return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, although Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink believes there is no chance of a successful revival of his Chelsea career.

He told Mr Q that he doesn’t believe there is a role for Garnacho in Alonso’s system, and it would be difficult for him to earn his way back into contention.

He said: “I think it will be very difficult for Garnacho to come back, because Chelsea don’t really play with wingers at the moment, and he’s not a wing-back either. I don’t see how or where he can fit in with (Xabi) Alonso’s plans. I think it would be difficult for him if and when he returns to Chelsea.”

The Blues elected to stick with options of Rogers and Jamie Gittens for this season, although the latter is yet to start a Premier League game so far during this campaign.

Reports have since emerged that Gittens asked to leave the club during the summer. However, after parting ways with Garnacho they had to keep hold of the England U21 international.

It may be a while yet before the winger takes part in meaningful action at Stamford Bridge after Gittens was spotted on crutches after representing his nation’s U21 side during the international break.

Even if Garnacho does return, expect Chelsea to look to the transfer market again when the season comes to an end rather than look to integrate him back into the squad.
