Why Chelsea allowed Cole Palmer on holiday despite pulling out of England squad
Chelsea cleared Cole Palmer to travel abroad following his withdrawal from international duty.
Cole Palmer has been on absolute fire for Chelsea this season, showing exactly why he’s their main man. He kicked off the campaign in unbelievable form, putting in masterclasses against Fulham and Leeds with goals and assists, as well as adding to his tally against Brighton and Hull.
That form made his England selection a no-brainer. But right on the heels of the Brentford match, a muscle injury struck and forced Palmer to pull out of the squad.
Who is the most underrated Chelsea player of the Premier League era, and why? 👀
Cole Palmer travels abroad despite injury
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea handed their non-international players a nine-day break at the start of the international fixture window before welcoming them back to full team training, though a few are still on tailored solo programmes.
The club put together bespoke plans for each player based on individual physical, medical, and workload needs. Cole Palmer’s setup was built around a specific recovery routine for his injury. His trip abroad got the green light from Chelsea’s medical staff because it completely fit those guidelines, with a personal rehab trainer travelling with him to make sure his recovery stayed right on target.
There’s definitely a feeling this was just Chelsea playing it safe with Palmer. We’ve seen Arsenal do the exact same trick plenty of times, pulling key men out of international duty the second there’s any slight tweak or niggle.
Considering how vital Palmer is to everything Chelsea do, you can hardly blame the Blues. He’s had a few fitness issues and annoying little injuries already, so risking him for England when he isn’t totally right makes zero sense for the club.
Chelsea need him wrapped in cotton wool because, without him, their attack just doesn’t function the same way.
