Chelsea smashed their club-record transfer record to bring in Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, however with inflation taken into account he is not their most expensive signing.

Blues supporters have been very pleased with Rogers‘ start to life at Stamford Bridge, contributing to eight goals in seven games in all competitions so far.

He has helped form one of the most devastating attacks in the Premier League alongside Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro, which is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in Xabi Alonso’s first few weeks in charge.

Chelsea’s most expensive signing of all time with inflation

Having a big-money forward hit the ground running instantly has not always been the way in West London. It took Fernando Torres nearly three months in 2011 after his move from Liverpool.

There was a lot of excitement after Chelsea had convinced one of their rivals’ best players, who always seemed to score against them, to join them for a fee of £50m at the time.

However, when taking inflation into account, that deal would be worth £162.7m, making it the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history.

The Spaniard would end up playing 172 games for the Blues, scoring 45 goals and assisting another 30, and ultimately struggling to lead the line until he was properly replaced by Diego Costa under Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea needed this break BADLY… but with so many players racking up minutes for their countries, did it actually help them or could it have made things worse? 🤔

Chelsea’s top ten signings with inflation in mind

Torres leads the way on this ranking, with another flop in Andriy Shevchenko in second at a whopping £150m. They both lead Moises Caicedo, whose price tag with inflation is as high as £134m.

With inflation, Rogers is actually only the ninth most expensive signing of all time at Stamford Bridge, with Didier Drogba and Romelu Lukaku’s fees both exceeding £130m.

Michael Essien, Enzo Fernandez and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s fees all translate to being higher than the Rogers fee, with Shaun Wright-Phillips making up the top 10.
