Antonio Valencia urges Man United to sign Chelsea midfielder after Andrey Santos mistake
Xabi Alonso had to be ruthless in the summer, culling his bloated Chelsea squad after last season’s failure to qualify for Europe, and one of the club’s first sales was Andrey Santos to Man United.
The Blues raked in an enormous amount of money from player sales, even aside from Enzo Fernandez. Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Cucurella and Santos all left the club for £50m or more in the summer.
Santos was one of the first out the door, joining Man United for £50m, and it hasn’t worked. Jamie Redknapp questioned his role, while Steven Gerrard doesn’t think Santos is good enough for Man United.
Antonio Valencia urges Man United to sign another Chelsea star
Despite the failure of Santos’ move to Old Trafford, at least at this early stage, another Chelsea player could be targeted by Michael Carrick’s side if Antonio Valencia had his way. He wants Moises Caicedo.
There is very little chance that Chelsea consider any bids for Caicedo, who signed a new contract during the Liam Rosenior era. But Valencia has told AS that if he could sign any midfielder, it would be Caicedo.
Lamine Camara and Moises Caicedo are VERY similar midfielders…
Should Chelsea be targeting someone else instead? Let us know who you think!
“I’d sign another midfielder,” the former Old Trafford right-back said. “I’d bring in a player like Moises Caicedo, keeping it local (laughs). And then I’d bring in a centre-back and a right or left full-back.”
Having cost well over £100m, Chelsea would almost certainly request a bigger fee than the one they received from Man City for Enzo Fernandez, given Caicedo put pen to paper at Chelsea earlier this year.
What Caicedo said about his Chelsea future before the summer
Caicedo has obviously been linked with a move away from Chelsea, especially with the Blues finishing in 10th place. Real Madrid were said to be among his suitors before Caicedo signed a new Chelsea contract.
He wants to become a Chelsea legend and loves being at Stamford Bridge. Fabrizio Romano backed up that claim: “Caicedo said I am a Chelsea player, under contract; I want to become a Chelsea legend.
“Strong position from Moises Caicedo. It’s not about Madrid. Caicedo has a strong desire to be part of the Chelsea project. He feels the love of Chelsea fans, and Chelsea people. A very good connection.
“But Caicedo believes in the project. He could have joined Liverpool when he went to Chelsea. He feels there is more to do and more to win at Chelsea. He wants to become a Chelsea legend,” Romano added.
If there were any doubts during the second half of last season, there are none now. Chelsea’s project is exciting, Caicedo will be feeling the love after making a return from his injury, while United are struggling.
