Two goalkeepers Chelsea must now target after Robert Sanchez error vs Fulham
Chelsea beat Fulham 3-2 on Monday night, but it could have been a much more comfortable victory had Robert Sanchez not been in goal.
Sanchez failed to save a shot that was right at him before parrying the ball straight in front of Gonzalo Garcia, who grabbed Fulham’s second goal.
Xabi Alonso has defended Sanchez, but it is quite clear now that Chelsea need a new goalkeeper. This is the 28-year-old’s fourth season at Stamford Bridge and he is yet to fully convince.
The club keep briefing that they are happy with their goalkeeper options, but if that changes between now and the end of the transfer window, who should they sign? Here at The Chelsea Chronicle, we think there are only two names to consider.
Enough is enough! It’s time to replace Robert Sanchez, but who should Chelsea sign? 😤
He made two more mistakes against Fulham on Monday 🤦♂️
Emiliano Martinez
It is a surprise that Chelsea have not made a move for Emiliano Martinez. The Aston Villa goalkeeper is on the market and would bring experience to Alonso’s squad, which the club have been looking for this summer.
Martinez is one of the best keepers in the Premier League and would be a clear upgrade on Sanchez.
The 33-year-old is a great shot-stopper, commands his box extremely well and does not make as many mistakes as Sanchez. Signing Martinez and replacing Sanchez with him is an absolute no-brainer!

Diogo Costa
Due to his Premier League experience, Martinez should be at the top of Chelsea’s list. But if they cannot sign the Argentina international for whatever reason, Diogo Costa would not be a bad alternative.
The Porto goalkeeper is also a brilliant shot-stopper and was one of Portugal’s best players at the World Cup.
Earlier this month, it was claimed that Chelsea were in talks to sign Costa, but the Blues have since denied interest in the 26-year-old.
At this stage, though, they have to consider signing him, Martinez or another No.1. Sanchez cannot be trusted; it is as simple as that.
