Robert Huth doesn’t think Morgan Rogers should be pigeonholed

There is no doubt that Rogers is one of the best attackers in the Premier League. Under Alonso, the Englishman has been playing on the left side of a three-man attack, but Huth does not think he should be glued to one position.

In an interview with Goal, the former Chelsea defender said: “I don’t like to pigeonhole players too much, to be fair. Can Rogers play through the middle? Yes. Could he play out wide? Yes. I mean, these guys are skillful players with pace, left foot, right foot, athleticism, they’ve got the ability to run past any defender, pretty much on any position on the pitch.

“To sort of pigeonhole him, which we have done in the past, where he can only play in this position, he can only play in this position. Of course, there’s going to be an area where players are most comfortable, but these are attacking players. The picture doesn’t really change. They’re still trying to do the same thing, drop a shoulder, get a shot away, do a stepover, go past your full-back. It’s not really something I’m too concerned about.”

Where Rogers plays will not be Alonso’s biggest issue right now. His biggest concern will be Chelsea’s backline.

They conceded another two goals to Hull City at the weekend after letting Leeds put three past them in the Carabao Cup.

Jorrel Hato was responsible for one goal and is now being put under real pressure by Pep Chavarria, who is pushing him for the left wing-back spot in Alonso’s team.

Where Morgan Rogers has played in his career

Alonso has not really had to lean on Rogers’ versatility yet, but he certainly is an attacker who can play in more than one position in the frontline.

At Aston Villa, the England international played 61 games as an attacking midfielder, 35 as a left winger and 18 as a right winger, according to Transfermarkt.

At the World Cup, he even started on the right in the Three Lions’ 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals.

Rogers grabbed another early goal for Chelsea over the weekend, so Alonso will just be happy to have a player of his quality available, especially with his defence struggling.

At the moment, the Spaniard is relying on Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro to win his side games by blowing the opposition’s defence out of the water.
