Chelsea fans have their say on Xabi Alonso’s start at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea fans have mixed thoughts on their start to life under Xabi Alonso after he was named manager of the club over the summer.
The Blues caught the eye of a lot of Premier League fans with their entertaining wins against Fulham and Brighton, however are now three games without a victory.
Alonso’s side were taken apart by Brentford in their final game before the international break, however they were without a number of key players due to injuries.
It seems the fitness woes of Moises Caicedo, as well as Joao Pedro, Reece James and Marco Palestra, have been taken into account by Blues fans when honestly rating their start to life under the Spaniard.

What has worked, and what needs improving? 🤔
One user said: “I don’t feel like the problems we have are 100% his fault. Same issues from last season arising, players not running enough. Maybe we have to go to a back four and see what that brings as maybe the likes of Colwill will improve. Losing Caicedo is a massive blow. He clearly is our best player.”
Another added: “Average but only because of the defence. Clearly our main issue which does not seem to be addressed. Simply has to get his best three at the back and let them play together continuously. Everything ahead of them is working well.”
Another claimed: “Okay for now, a lot of mess to be cleared. He has started well, offloading 39 players in one transfer window is amazing. He’ll steady the team in first half of the season and push for a top four in the second half of the season.”
Finally, one user said: “His first games were good. I think after the break he must not use that back three formation, in England it doesn’t work. Look at Amorim, the system failed dismally.”
Caicedo was close to returning for the last Chelsea game, and is expected to be back in the side after three weeks where he will not be representing his nation.
It remains to be seen if the Ecuador international’s return sees the Blues change formation, with Alonso having his preference for Premier League games so far.
He will form Chelsea’s strongest midfield partnership alongside Romeo Lavia with Enzo Fernandez out of the squad following his late exit to Manchester City.
The Blues are back in action on October 10 when they host Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, which promises to be a tough game after they finished above Chelsea last season.
