Then, there is Alan Shearer, who seemed to forget what he said about Palmer at the start of the year. But Chelsea know just how important Palmer is, and that is why the decision was made to withdraw him.

Danny Welbeck has just emphasised that, when asked by ViaPlay who has the best first touch in the Chelsea squad. He responded without hesitation that Palmer’s first touch exceeds any of his teammates.

How many goals and assists can Palmer get this season?

Last season, Palmer managed just 11 goals and three assists. This season, the former Man City star has already had a hand in six goals in seven games. Chelsea may play between 45 and 50 games this term.

It depends how far they go in the Cups, and if Palmer can remain fit. But if Palmer can remain injury free, and continue the level of form he is already showing, the England star could reach 30 goals and assists.

Should he manage to do that, Palmer will remind all just how effective he is – including Thomas Tuchel. This is a player that needs to be looked after by Chelsea, and Welbeck’s verdict is proof of that.
