Fans are losing patience, but Chelsea would be incredibly foolish to sell key player

Understandably, Chelsea supporters are very pleased with their team’s attack right now.

Joao Pedro missed Chelsea’s defeat to Brentford just before the international break, while Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers could not get the job done in his absence as the Blues succumbed to a 3-0 loss. However, overall, Pedro, Palmer and Rogers have really excelled this season.

The same cannot be said about Chelsea’s defence, though. Their backline has crumbled, with Levi Colwill really struggling in Xabi Alonso’s set-up.

Colwill has been playing on the left side of Alonso’s back three, and it has just not worked out so far. It is early days, and there is always a chance that the Spaniard switches to a back four. Even so, some Chelsea fans on TalkingPoints have clearly had enough of the young central defender.

It is true, Colwill has been underwhelming this season, but it is important to remember that the 23-year-old did suffer a serious ACL injury last summer. Chelsea are also conceding far too many goals for only one individual to get the blame.

In just five games, the Blues have already conceded 12 times, more than any other team in the Premier League. Clearly, there is a structural problem with Chelsea’s defence and midfield. The absence of Moises Caicedo has not helped either.

With all of that being said, Colwill has looked extremely uncomfortable playing on the left side of a back three and defending in the left channel.

Chelsea would be foolish to sell Levi Colwill

While Colwill does not appear to be a good fit for Alonso’s current set-up, Chelsea should not do anything rash here. Again, Alonso could eventually revert to a back four, which he used at the beginning of pre-season, and that could help Colwill to rediscover his best form.

If not, the England international is still a terrific footballer who may be able to adapt, while moving him to the central centre-back role is also another option.

Colwill is fantastic on the ball, great at getting close to his man and is a leader in Chelsea’s dressing room. Chelsea fans are right to be worried about Colwill, but it is way too soon to give up on a player of his quality.
