However, there is good news that this means the midfielder was not called up to represent his nation during the prolonged international break, and he will have enjoyed another three weeks of rest and recovery.
As per The Standard, his potential return date is October 10 against Bournemouth, and he is in line to be joined by a number of other stars who have had issues regarding their fitness in recent weeks.
Key attackers Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer both withdrew from international duty due to injury concerns, however both are expected to be available by the time Premier League action comes around again.
Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha are also in line to make their debuts for the club after the start of their careers at Stamford Bridge, with the Italian eyeing up a regular starting spot in the side.
As well as them, club captain Reece James is expected to be fit in time for that game, as well as Mike Penders after he picked up a small injury while away with Belgium on international break.
The only Chelsea player who is likely to remain out for the game is Jamie Gittens. He was spotted on crutches after featuring for England U21s during this international break.
With Morgan Rogers always favourite to start though, this could be the first opportunity Alonso has to name his strongest side for a Premier League game, at a time where supporters just need to be reminded how exciting things can be at Stamford Bridge.
Their defensive woes have been what has let them down so far, with no side conceding more goals than the Blues so far this season. However, the addition of Caicedo and Palestra to the starting side will be important as they look to establish themselves again as a major threat this season.
