If the latest reports are true, Xabi Alonso has to sell £70m Chelsea player
Chelsea are being linked with a whole host of defenders at the moment after a poor start to the season defensively. With 12 goals conceded in five, Chelsea need to improve at the back.
Abdukodir Khusanov, Raul Asencio, Alessandro Bastoni, and so many more defenders have been linked with Chelsea over the last week or two. Chelsea have gone 21 games without a league clean sheet.
Chelsea do have options at centre-back, but another has been linked, and he would be an excellent signing. The versatility of Jarell Quansah makes him ideal in Xabi Alonso’s side, even if he costs £60m.
Xabi Alonso needs to offload struggling £70m star
If Chelsea are going to lure Quansah back to the Premier League, not long after he moved to Germany with Leverkusen in 2025, then room needs to be made in Chelsea’s defence. Someone needs to go.
Josh Acheampong and Levi Colwill remain untouchables at Chelsea, while Maxence Lacroix only joined in the summer for a £52m fee. Jorrel Hato and Reece James can both play either side of the back three.
What do you make of Wesley Fofana in a Chelsea shirt? Is he good enough?🤔
The odd one out is Wesley Fofana, and it is fair to say the Frenchman has struggled once again to live up to his £70m price tag. If Chelsea are going to sign a player like Quansah, Fofana needs to be sold.
Fofana has struggled to shine in a Chelsea shirt ever since he moved to Stamford Bridge from Leicester. A £70m arrival, plagued by injury and off-field issues, Fofana has got to be moved on to make a signing.
How much did Chelsea want to sell Fofana for in the summer?
Fofana was bought from Leicester in BlueCo’s first summer. It has been four years now, and that means Chelsea are four years into a five-year player amortisation period, meaning Chelsea are £56m into a deal.
Anything over £14m then, for Fofana, would be deemed a profit. In the summer, Fofana was offered to Barcelona for £26m. If they can do a deal in that region, it would see Chelsea make a solid profit.
Whether Barcelona would be interested remains to be seen. But the Blues do need to consider a sale, and Fofana is the one who is closest to the exit door. Especially because Chelsea can sell him for a small fee.
