Chelsea scouts will love what Alex Scott said about playing in midfield three years ago
There are probably numerous reasons why Chelsea want to sign Alex Scott next year.
Firstly, they just need an extra body after losing Enzo Fernandez. Ideally, they would have brought in Scott during the summer, but Bournemouth’s stance was that the midfielder was not for sale and they just did not budge.
Nevertheless, a move to Stamford Bridge still looks inevitable. Chelsea are thought to be winning the race for Scott, with their interest in the 23-year-old not dying down.
Alex Scott and Lamine Camara are both exceptional talents, but who would improve Chelsea more and why?
Alex Scott prepared to ‘hit’ others in midfield
The midfielder market went mad in the last transfer window. The reality is that Chelsea will probably have to pay £100m or more for Scott.
The Englishman is probably not worth that valuation, but it is not hard to understand why Chelsea scouts like him. In an interview with The Guardian in 2023, Scott admitted that, as a midfielder, sometimes you almost have to “hit” other players and go through them.
Speaking about tactical fouls and playing in a deep midfield role, the England international said: “Sometimes it needs a player to almost hit someone a little bit and go through a player, in the nicest way possible. If you want to be a top midfielder who can play holding midfield, No 8 or a No 10, you need to have all those parts of your game.
“I can get a bit feisty in a game if I need to. I think if you ask my parents they will say the same thing about when I was a young lad playing at home.”
The above is definitely something that Moises Caicedo is willing to do in a blue shirt. In the Premier League last season, Caicedo picked up 11 yellow cards, which was the most in Chelsea’s squad, and one red card.
According to WhoScored, he also committed 1.6 fouls per game, more than any other Chelsea player. Scott thinks Caicedo is a tough opponent but could soon be his teammate if everything goes to plan for the Blues in 2027.
Chelsea team lacking fight and bite these days
Other than Caicedo, Chelsea do not have too many other players who are willing to engage in the dark arts a bit. We saw that against Arsenal, where the team did not really look ready to fight and do anything it takes to win.
Fernandez was a bit nasty at times, in a good way. But Chelsea can no longer call upon him.
Simply put, Chelsea have become a bit soft, and their scouts have had to realise that. It is why Scott could be exactly what they need.
