Fans debate which former Chelsea player they would add to Xabi Alonso’s team
Xabi Alonso has some talented players in his Chelsea squad, including the likes of Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Moises Caicedo.
However, this Chelsea side do not come anywhere close to some of the Chelsea teams of the past. They included some absolute legends that football fans on TalkingPoints have been talking about.
We recently asked supporters which ex-Chelsea player they would add to Alonso’s squad if it were impossible. The answers were hardly a surprise.
Legendary attackers of the past
Chelsea have had some amazing attackers in the Premier League era such as Eden Hazard and Didier Drogba.
One fan name-checked Hazard following the loss of Enzo Fernandez, who was also an impactful player for Chelsea in attack. Fernandez is a midfielder, but he played as a No.10 often last season, finishing the campaign with 15 goals in all competitions.
In Pedro, Chelsea currently have one of the best centre-forwards in the Premier League. He has got off to a flying start this term, scoring three goals and providing three assists in four games.
Even so, Drogba would still be welcomed back to Stamford Bridge.
While Chelsea do have Pedro, he missed their last game, a 3-0 loss to Brentford. Danny Welbeck is a very capable striker at this level, but Chelsea clearly suffered in Pedro’s absence.
Captain, leader, legend
Chelsea have the worst defence in the Premier League. That is a fact. No one has conceded more goals than them.
Therefore, it is no shock that some feel Alonso’s team would truly benefit from having a defender like John Terry. There is not a team that would not benefit, with Terry being one of the greatest centre-halves in Premier League history.
Chelsea have been linked with Como’s Jacobo Ramon and a couple of other centre-backs, but they are never going to find a defender as solid as Terry.
The former Chelsea star Xabi Alonso needs most
Chelsea’s defenders have not been great this season, but neither have their midfielders. Following Caicedo’s injury and Fernandez’s departure, it has been a problem position for Alonso this term.
With that in mind, the ex-Chelsea player the Blues could probably do with the most is N’Golo Kante, someone who can win the ball back and protect the backline.
Chelsea remain keen on Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, who is a brilliant midfielder. But he cannot do what Kante does.
