Three reasons why Alex Scott injury is actually good news for Chelsea ahead of January
The news emerged on Monday morning. Alex Scott has suffered a quadriceps injury, leaving Chelsea’s priority transfer target sidelined for the next two months – but it might actually help the Blues.
It is the worst possible timing for Scott. After Chelsea’s bid was rejected in the summer, the Bournemouth star has gone to a new level, for club and for England. He started his first England game on Saturday.
Scott has endured setbacks before. As a teenager, he considered quitting football when released by Southampton. But he joined hometown club Guernsey and 15 games later, he moved to Bristol City.
While it shouldn’t affect a possible January move for Scott, given he should be back in action come early December, the injury might actually help the Blues amid reports that Chelsea are leading the Scott race.
Three reasons why Chelsea may benefit from Alex Scott’s injury
Immediate boost as Chelsea play host to Bournemouth
Obviously, no one likes to see a player get injured. But in the immediate short term, it is a big boost for Chelsea because Xabi Alonso’s side host Bournemouth on Saturday. The Cherries will be a weaker side.
It gives Chelsea a real chance to get back to winning ways after three Premier League games without a win – having lost to Arsenal and Brentford, drawing against Hull in between. No Scott is a quick boost.
Alex Scott and Lamine Camara are both exceptional talents, but who would improve Chelsea more and why?
Value won’t increase as Scott’s momentum set to stall
In terms of actually trying to sign Scott, the midfielder has been in immense form. He did not look out of place against Croatia before he picked up the muscle injury and Thomas Tuchel had to take Scott off.
But that momentum now stalls with the injury. Bournemouth might have been hoping that his price tag would increase in parallel with his momentum, but now, Chelsea might get him cheaper than forecasted.
Bournemouth more likely to cash in come January
Scott will return in December, and it will be an unknown as to the kind of player he will be. His confidence will have taken a knock, and he will no longer be riding the wave he has been in the past few weeks.
With his contract expiring in 2028, Scott will enter the final 18 months of his Cherries deal. The injury may just convince Bournemouth to cash in now, with the future an unknown following the muscle injury.
