Who should be Chelsea’s January priority? Delving into Alex Scott’s and Lamine Camara’s numbers
Chelsea are expected to sign at least one new midfielder in January, with the Blues still keen on Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and AS Monaco’s Lamine Camara.
Chelsea tried to sign both Scott and Camara in the summer transfer window but were unsuccessful. They are not giving up, though.
While Chelsea’s relations with Monaco are not good right now due to the manner in which their deal for Camara collapsed, another swoop for the 22-year-old is not being ruled out. However, Scott appears to be their No.1 target.
It is being reported that Chelsea are the frontrunners to sign Scott in 2027. Given Chelsea’s wealth and their need to significantly strengthen in midfield, it is not impossible for them to sign both. But if it is a choice between the two, whom should they prioritise? What do the stats say?
Well, Scott and Camara have played virtually the same number of minutes in the league this season. Scott has racked up 447, while Camara has played 450. Both men have played five games.
Scott has scored one goal and is yet to assist, while Camara has done the opposite. So far, very similar, but defensively Camara clears Scott.
According to WhoScored, he is making 5.2 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game, while Scott is making 1.8 and 1.6 respectively. Camara’s passing has also been more accurate.
The Senegal international has a pass success rate of 91.9%, while Scott’s is only 81.6%. It must be noted that Scott gets forward much more, which is why he is making more key passes, 2.2 to Camara’s 0.6. But Chelsea arguably need a defensive midfield specialist who is excellent at winning the ball back like Camara.
Alex Scott and Lamine Camara are both exceptional talents, but who would improve Chelsea more and why?
They have not had that this season in the absence of Moises Caicedo and have absolutely collapsed as a result. If Chelsea want that to change, to have a more stable midfield and someone who can adequately deputise for Caicedo, Camara is their man.
To reiterate, Scott seems to be Chelsea’s top target ahead of the January transfer window. But perhaps it should be Camara.
