How the Belgian media reacted to Romeo Lavia’s display vs France after stunning assist
Romeo Lavia is probably in the best form he has been in since joining Chelsea from Southampton back in 2023.
The midfielder is performing for both club and country right now, even managing to come up with a couple of goal contributions. In Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Brighton & Hove Albion near the beginning of the campaign, he scored his first goal for the Blues.
Since then, Lavia has also gone on to record an assist for Belgium in their 4-1 defeat to France in the Nations League on Monday night. You will not see a better pass throughout the rest of 2026.
Alex Scott and Lamine Camara are both exceptional talents, but who would improve Chelsea more and why?
While Belgium were beaten, Lavia was still able to put in a solid all-round performance, which did not go unnoticed. The Belgian media were quick to highlight the 22-year-old, impressed with what they saw from him at the Stade de France.
After the game, one Belgian outlet, Nieuwsblad, stated that “Lavia has definitely arrived with the Red Devils”, which is hard to disagree with. Lavia’s quality has been there for everyone to see since his breakthrough season at Southampton four years ago.
However, because of injuries and his fitness, he has not really had the chance to show it on the international stage. Lavia had earned just one cap with the Belgium national team before this international break, which came all the way back in 2023.
He has now racked up another four, finally arriving for Belgium, as Nieuwsblad put it. VoetbalFocus was also impressed with Lavia’s display. “That assist fit into a match in which Lavia not only did his defensive work but was also a prominent presence in attack,” they wrote.
Lavia received praise from Belgium fans as well, and they will now be hoping that he has put all of his injury woes behind him. If the former Southampton man can stay fit, he could be a big player for them at Euro 2028 should Belgium qualify.
Chelsea want to sign Alex Scott from Bournemouth in the new year. Until then, Xabi Alonso will have to rely on the likes of Lavia and Moises Caicedo once the Ecuadorian returns from injury.
