Chelsea defender Malo Gusto was linked with quite a few clubs during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool were reportedly one club who were interested in Gusto, but the right-back remained at Stamford Bridge in the end. He has been an important player for Xabi Alonso this season, featuring in all but one of Chelsea’s games so far.

On the pitch, Gusto’s performances have not been the best. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old is still attracting interest ahead of the January transfer window.

Malo Gusto’s preference is to stay at Chelsea

According to Flashscore, Gusto still has suitors and Chelsea are considering slashing his valuation. In the summer, it was thought that the Blues wanted £75m for their full-back.

The same outlet has claimed, though, that Gusto would prefer to stay at Chelsea. However, if the Frenchman is not able to remain a key player under Alonso, he will look for a transfer.

Chelsea needed this break BADLY… but with so many players racking up minutes for their countries, did it actually help them or could it have made things worse? 🤔

Gusto could easily find himself falling down the pecking order in the coming weeks. Marco Palestra is set to return from injury, so that is another player he will have to compete against for the right wing-back position in Alonso’s starting XI.

Alonso has also played Gusto in midfield this season, but that is very unlikely to be a long-term thing. The France international has struggled there and will definitely not be starting in that area of the pitch once Moises Caicedo is fully fit again.

Like Palestra, Caicedo has also been out injured, but Alonso will be hoping that he can have him back soon. As long as he remains fit, Romeo Lavia will be expected to partner Caicedo in the middle.

Lavia was in stunning form for Belgium during the international break and has impressed for Chelsea this season. Going forward, there will be no reason for Alonso to play Gusto in midfield. And if his defending does not improve, the former Lyon man should not be starting at right wing-back either.
