Chelsea have already clocked up nine new arrivals this summer, and that is set to become 11 in the coming days with Jordan Henderson and possibly Pep Chavarria.
Five pre-arranged deals before the hiring of Xabi Alonso, and four since, have taken Chelsea’s spending north of £300m. That is even if Danny Welbeck’s arrival is believed to have cost a tiny, nominal amount.

That could increase further this week. Pep Chavarria is said to be in England to do a medical, while Jordan Henderson’s announcement is imminent. Now, reports have come out of Portugal about another signing.
It is claimed that Chelsea are in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Portugal’s no.1 Diogo Costa from Porto. The 26-year-old has a contract at Porto until 2030, which boasts a release clause said to be worth around £55m.

When the summer window began, many felt a new goalkeeper was a priority. But since then, focus has been placed on other options in the squad. Now, that has changed with the potential signing of Costa.
He could well end up at Chelsea. It would see Chelsea sign “the best in the world,” according to Porto legend Vitor Baia, who was in goal when Jose Mourinho won the 2004 Champions League with Porto.
Asked by Sport TV and quoted by O Jogo back in 2022, Baia was asked if he could be the best in the world between the sticks later on in his career. He replied: “He’s already the best in the world”.

Since breaking through the Porto academy, Costa has clocked up 247 appearances for the Portuguese giants. He is largely recognised as the best goalkeeper outside of the top-five leagues in world football.
Costa has kept 109 clean sheets in those 247 games, almost a clean sheet every two matches. Incredible stats that will obviously decline with a move to the Premier League, given Porto’s Portuguese dominance.
