Just 24 hours after Chelsea limped to a point at home against Hull City, Manchester City and Enzo Maresca secured a 1-0 win over Man United – and Chelsea fans have discussed Enzo Fernandez.

The Blues lacked midfield quality on Saturday afternoon as Hull came from behind to lead Chelsea at one stage, eventually settling for a draw. More frustration for Xabi Alonso, who was clearly agitated.

He will have been even more so after watching the Manchester derby. City went down to 10 men with Phil Foden shown a straight red – something that was particularly common at Chelsea under Maresca.

But it seemed to bring the best out of Enzo Fernandez, just at the same time in which Chelsea’s options in the middle of the park are dwindling or lacking in form. City won 1-0, and Fernandez was excellent.

Chelsea fans realise selling Fernandez was a mistake

At the time of his departure, even without buying a replacement, Chelsea fans were largely delighted to see the back of Fernandez. Clearly, this was a player no longer committed to the club and wanted to go.

The Telegraph claims that Fernandez handed in two transfer requests and claims the relationship he once had with the rest of the team had gone cold. But the hole left by Fernandez is vast at Stamford Bridge.

His performance for City on Sunday proved just how much Chelsea miss the Argentine, and now fans have come to that realisation. Chelsea fans believe selling Fernandez to City was a mistake.

“Enzo bossed him”, was the verdict of one Chelsea fan, who believed the former Blues man got the best of Bruno Fernandes. Another fan described his display as an “unbelievable performance” at Old Trafford.

Another said that the former Benfica star “dropped a masterclass” in midfield. The realisation among fans is clear, none more so than this post: “Sold Enzo to use Gusto in midfield. Never seen anything like this.”

Chelsea need Moises Caicedo back as soon as possible

Focusing on Chelsea, Alonso is only going to get the best out of his current squad when he has his best midfielder available in Fernandez’s absence. Moises Caicedo remains injured with a calf problem.

The issue worsened when Alonso decided to bring him on against his old side Brighton, and forced to take him off moments later. The hole left by Fernandez looks worse right now, due to Caicedo’s injury.

But when Caicedo is back and in the starting line-up, doing what he does in a Chelsea shirt, Alonso and Chelsea will be able to put Fernandez behind them and focus on the future. For now, it remains raw.
