The three Chelsea players Emi Martinez thinks are truly ‘amazing’ after win vs Brighton
Three wins in three for Xabi Alonso and Chelsea as the Blues continue their excellent start to the 2026-27 season with a 4-3 win over Brighton – and Emi Martinez is delighted to be at Stamford Bridge.
After wins against Fulham and Luton, Alonso and Chelsea faced their toughest test of the season with a home clash against Brighton. A side that beat Chelsea 3-0 at The Amex last time the two sides met.
Plenty of candidates, but who was your Man of the Match against Brighton?
The drama began even before the game had started. Chelsea announced Emi Martinez on Sunday, but it was even more of a surprise to see the World Cup winner start in goal for the Blues against The Seagulls.
He might have conceded three goals on debut, but Chelsea got the win. Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto, Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer got the goals as the Chelsea boss secured three points with just 26% possession.
Emi Martinez believes Chelsea have three truly ‘amazing’ players
The former Aston Villa and Arsenal goalkeeper won’t have been happy to concede three goals, but he will be delighted to get a win and feel the roar of the Stamford Bridge crowd for the first time, at full pelt.
A whirlwind few days, resulting in the perfect way with a crucial win. Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Martinez shared why he joined Chelsea and believes the Blues have three truly ‘amazing’ players.

He believes the front three of Morgan Rogers, Palmer and Pedro are going to be pivotal for Chelsea this season. Indeed, many believe the attacking trio is currently the best the Premier League has to offer.
“The front three is amazing. When we go forward, we can hurt teams. We had a lot of chances to finish the game. Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro had chances to kill it. But we need to bring the goals down.”
What Xabi Alonso said about the signing of Emi Martinez
It was a shock to see Martinez in the starting line-up, with Robert Sanchez set to leave the club. The Spaniard has been told to find himself a new home following the £7.5m addition of Martinez this week.
It comes after his mistakes against Fulham. Alonso was believed to have decided on keeping Sanchez, but those mistakes proved costly. A week later, and he’s being told to leave, with Martinez in the building.
What did you make of Emi Martinez’s debut? Is he the missing piece for Chelsea to win the league?
“We are very happy with Emi and we are delighted to have him here at Chelsea,” Alonso said of Martinez ahead of his debut. “To have such a goalkeeper of this stature, of this personality, it’s very good for us.
“I think that he will bring lots of qualities, and I’m sure that he can have a straight impact, and that’s why we decided that he’s ready to play straightaway,” the Chelsea gaffer continued, on starting Martinez.
Alonso is not the only one delighted to have Martinez in Chelsea blue. Prior to the game, John Terry declared himself delighted at the signing of Martinez, describing the Argentine as a “world-class” player.
