Paul Scholes warns Chelsea what will happen if they sell Enzo Fernandez to Man City

So far, Chelsea have coped without their vice-captain. They have won their last two games under new manager Xabi Alonso, with Fernandez absent for those victories over Brighton & Hove Albion and Luton Town.

Nevertheless, Scholes still thinks the 25-year-old moving to City could have some serious ramifications for his current employers.

Paul Scholes fears for Chelsea’s season if Enzo Fernandez joins Man City

Chelsea’s 2025/26 season was disrupted by Enzo Maresca’s discussions with City to replace Pep Guardiola and his eventual resignation.

Scholes now thinks City could ruin Chelsea’s campaign once again by taking Fernandez away from them.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football, the United icon said: “They obviously unsettled the manager in December–January time to bring him to City for the following season.

“City, really, getting into Maresca, ruined Chelsea’s season last season because they were flying at the time. They were going really well. And if Enzo Fernandez goes to City now in these next 24 hours, City could ruin Chelsea’s season for the last two seasons.”

Chelsea will only sell Fernandez if they can find a replacement for the Argentine. That is at least the message coming out of Stamford Bridge.

It has been claimed that Chelsea have contacted AS Roma about a potential deal for Manu Kone, so the Frenchman could be an option to replace Fernandez.

Whether it is Kone, Lamine Camara or someone else, Chelsea could do with another midfielder coming in. With Fernandez making himself unavailable to play and Moises Caicedo struggling with an injury, Xabi Alonso’s side have looked far from convincing in the middle of the park.

In their 4-3 win against Brighton, defender Malo Gusto even got a run-out in midfield. That cannot be a long-term solution to Chelsea’s midfield issues.

It is why it would be madness for Chelsea to sell Fernandez without having a replacement lined up. Kone or Camara could be that replacement, so now it is a matter of whether the Blues can agree a fee with Roma or Monaco. That and the whole Fernandez saga in general could go down to the wire.
