What football insiders are saying about Romeo Lavia as Chelsea resurgence continues
Romeo Lavia has made a strong start to the season, playing in all three of Chelsea’s Premier League games so far.
As a matter of fact, the midfielder has started each of those games, which is a hugely positive development after all of his injury woes.
Despite not being able to show what he is truly capable of at Chelsea, many in the football world still believe in the Belgian.
Let’s settle this, Chelsea are better off with Reece James at right-back… 🤔
Do you prefer James in midfield or at right-back – and why?
Romeo Lavia has ‘incredibly high bar’
Lavia is still only 22 years of age, and people in the game are convinced that he has a very high ceiling.
Discussing Lavia on The Athletic FC podcast, journalist David Ornstein said: “If they can keep Romeo Lavia fit, there are many in football who think he’s got an incredibly high bar. As he was coming through, they thought he could be one of the best central midfielders of his generation.”
It is not hard to see where these football insiders are coming from. When Lavia does get onto the pitch, he can be incredible at times.
The Belgium international is just not frightened of the ball. He always tries to make himself available for a pass anywhere on the pitch before receiving it and moving it on to a more offensive player.
His confidence could really be seen during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates last Sunday. He did not shy away from the ball or any physical battle in the London derby.

With Lavia having been fit for Chelsea’s first three league games of the season, perhaps he is starting to trust himself and his body again, hence the confidence he has been showing lately.
His goal against Brighton & Hove Albion the game before also would have helped the former Southampton man.
In the Arsenal match, Gary Neville was surprised to see Lavia go off, impressed with what he had seen from the Chelsea star at the Emirates. However, the Manchester United legend did acknowledge that the club are probably managing his fitness.
Lavia looked sharp before he was substituted, though, and hopefully things remain that way. With Enzo Fernandez gone and Chelsea failing to bring in a replacement, he is really going to be needed in the first half of the season.
