While Xabi Alonso is boss, every Chelsea winger should be worried after Estevao and new reports

But Alonso is ruthless. He has already had to offload an army of players this summer, and more are likely to follow. Especially if he continues to use the 3-4-2-1 system he is currently deploying in West London.

It’s already been reported that Estevao is worried about his long-term future at Chelsea, with the Brazilian unwilling to start playing as a wing-back. Don Hutchison urged Liverpool to sign Estevao amid the noise.

Estevao has been afforded 16 minutes despite the impact the former Palmeiras winger can have. He almost scored a stunning equaliser against Arsenal, only for the league’s best – David Raya – to save it.

That is what Estevao can do. He remains a Chelsea ‘untouchable’, but while there is no room for a wide man in Alonso’s side, why would he stay? We wrote how Estevao’s concerns could become infectious.

Now, reports say Jamie Gittens has asked to leave. He’s played even less than Estevao and Roma tried to sign him on the final day of the window, but Chelsea would only consider selling Gittens permanently.

Geovany Quenda, Jesse Derry, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen…

Ultimately, if you are a winger that is unable to operate as a full-back or provide cover as a 10, you are not going to get regular game time under Alonso at Chelsea. Quenda has not yet made his debut.

Jesse Derry’s game time on loan at Sporting has gone down, but he will be increasingly worried about his Chelsea exposure back home. Ryan Kavuma-McQueen has been on fire, on loan with Portsmouth.

But the duel-winning monster is not going to get a chance at Chelsea if Alonso sticks with his current system. Players need to show their versatility to stand any chance of being a winger in Alonso’s squad.

Even if their name is Estevao or Gittens, they won’t get the game time they desire in a Chelsea shirt under Alonso. If it wasn’t clear already, Alonso is ruthless and needs his entire squad to buy into his methods.

Failing that, they’ll be shown the door.
