Brazil were one of the World Cup favourites going into the summer’s tournament with Carlo Ancelotti at the helm, but the Italian stunned everyone when he didn’t call up Chelsea’s Joao Pedro.

Pedro starred for Chelsea last season. In 12 months, the former Watford striker has made his £60m arrival from Brighton seem like a bargain. These days, he’s considered one of the best strikers in English football.

What do you make of Carlo Ancelotti leaving Joao Pedro out of his World Cup squad?🤔

Andrey Santos as well!

Not only that, but he was named Chelsea’s Player of the Season last season. Pedro enjoyed a brilliant year – one of Chelsea’s rare shining lights in a dismal season. This season, he has four goals and assists already.

Goals scored against Brighton and Fulham, Pedro has also laid on two assists. He might well add to that come the end of play Wednesday, with Leeds visiting Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup third round.

Carlo Ancelotti admits mistake as Joao Pedro called-up

It looked as if Pedro was overlooked for the inclusion of Neymar by Ancelotti in his Brazil squad. But Neymar was nowhere near fit enough, and the Santos star’s only involvement was a very late penalty.

Brazil were knocked out by Norway, and Pedro must have felt some vindication, even though he would have wanted his country to do well. The September and October breaks have been merged into one.

It sees some countries play as many as four times in the space of a fortnight. Brazil take on Australia twice in the space of four days at the end of the month, and Pedro has now been called up by Ancelotti.

The ex-Chelsea boss has clearly seen the light, admitting his own mistake in not selecting Pedro for the World Cup and now giving him a recall. Estevao has been included too, after missing out due to injury.

When Joao Pedro, Estevao and Andrey Santos will be in action…

Not only have Pedro and Estevao got the nod, but so has Andrey Santos. The midfielder was also absent from Brazil’s World Cup squad but after his £50m move to Man United, Ancelotti has given him a call-up.

DISCUSS: Carlo Ancelotti was wrong to leave Andrey Santos out of his Brazil World Cup squad 🏆

He was inch-perfect aganist Spurs.

Brazil play three games during the break, starting with a double-header against Australia. The first is on September 25 at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium and then the 29th; Suncorp stadium in Brisbane.

Then, on October 3, Brazil’s squad travel to India, namely the Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata. Three friendly fixtures for Ancelotti’s men, and three they will be expected to win with some ease during the break.
