What Morgan Rogers hilariously said off-camera when told Chelsea pal Cole Palmer was MOTM
An incredible turnaround saw Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea win 6-3 against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night – but Morgan Rogers thinks he was robbed of the Man of the Match award.
A bizarre match saw Leeds dominate the first 45 and go into the break 1-0 up, thanks to a towering header from Tarik Muharemovic. It saw Xabi Alonso make four changes, bringing on Chelsea’s big guns.

On came Reece James, Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto and Morgan Rogers. Brenden Aaronson made it 2-0 to Leeds, but Chelsea came roaring back. Alonso’s men scored a total of six goals in just 41 minutes.
Both Palmer and Danny Welbeck got themselves a brace, while Neto and Valentin Barco also scored – the latter netting his first Chelsea goal. Palmer got two, but Rogers laid on four assists in the second half.
Given the relationship between Palmer and Rogers, which was forged at Man City and in England’s youth sides, the two have combined brilliantly since Chelsea paid a club-record £117m to sign him from Villa.
That connection makes for good viewing, too. Often, the duo are called for media duties, and tonight was no different. The duo stood in front of the Sky Sports cameras as Palmer was awarded the MOTM award.
But Rogers was stunned. On camera, when asked to present Palmer with the award, Rogers said: “Unfortunately, it’s rigged, man. It’s rigged.” But off-camera, Rogers was stunned by Rob Green’s choice.
Sky Sports aired footage before the duo spoke to pundits Conor Coady and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. It saw Rogers say: “Nah, nah, I can’t believe that. I got four assists! That’s mental that.”
The last time Chelsea scored six against a Premier League side
Putting aside Rogers’ vanity, it was brilliant viewing on Wednesday night. Chelsea scored six goals for the first time against a Premier League side, in any competition, for two and a half years. Alonso’s fifth game.
The last time they netted six against a Premier League team was at the start of the 2024-25 season, a 6-2 win over Wolves. A game in which Noni Madueke scored three, and Palmer also got on the score sheet.
Alonso has got this Chelsea side playing with freedom. Indeed, in his five games, Chelsea have scored a whopping 16 goals. However, Alonso will be concerned – they have also conceded a total of 10 goals.
