The Blues attack was firing again, with Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro scoring either side of a Hull brace as they continued to impress upon their return to the Premier League.

Alonso lined Chelsea up in a back four, which was no problem due to the expectation that they were going to have more of the ball, and come up against a consistent low block.

Xabi Alonso makes mistake in not starting Maxence Lacroix for Chelsea vs Hull

However, when dropping a centre-back he decided to leave new signing Maxence Lacroix on the bench and start the duo of Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana.

Neither centre-back impressed in our player ratings, with the key reason why being how they were dominated physically by the Tigers’ attack.

Their first goal came from a cross which was not dealt with by Jorrel Hato, a situation which Lacroix would’ve been in control of to make sure the ball didn’t bounce in a dangerous area.

The second came from a corner, and this was an area where the Blues were under the cosh throughout the game, as they struggled to deal with their opponents’ height and physicality.

Lacroix is Chelsea’s best centre-back in the air, and the decision to not start him when Hull’s threat was obvious remains to be answered.

The France international did come on in the final moments, where he made two interceptions in just four minutes on the pitch.

Alonso was quick to take the blame for the Blues’ very poor start against Leeds in the EFL Cup, however he needs to take responsibility for this situation too.
