Chelsea reminded that they missed out on the perfect Enzo Fernandez replacement

Camara would have been an important player for the Blues, especially now with Moises Caicedo injured. He has a very similar profile to the Ecuadorian.

However, Chelsea had an opportunity to make an even better signing than Camara, one with a profile much closer to Fernandez’s.

Bruno Guimaraes was the ideal replacement for Enzo Fernandez

All things considered, Bruno Guimaraes would have been the perfect successor to Fernandez at Stamford Bridge and reminded the club of that fact on Saturday.

Guimaraes came off the bench for Arsenal to score a magnificent goal against Sunderland.

It was such a clutch moment, and if Arsenal go on to win the Premier League title again by a small margin, supporters will look back at that strike. It was 0-0 when Guimaraes came on and Sunderland just missed a penalty.

Fernandez often produced clutch moments like that for Chelsea. When you look at Chelsea’s midfield now, there is not really anyone who is capable of doing that.

That is not the biggest issue with Chelsea’s midfield right now, though. The Blues’ current midfielders are struggling to control games, while Xabi Alonso is lacking options because of injuries to Caicedo and Jordan Henderson. The latter would not have been a starter anyway.

The frustrating thing is that Chelsea reportedly did have some interest in Guimaraes, but they spent most of their time chasing Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.

Guimaraes only cost £75m as well, and you can say only because the likes of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes went for far more and are inferior midfielders.

You suspect that Scott would have also cost more than Guimaraes had Bournemouth been willing to sell the 23-year-old.

Ultimately, Chelsea would have been much better off pursuing Guimaraes and would be in a much better position than they are in now if they signed him. Their loss is Arsenal’s gain, which was clear to see after Saturday’s round of Premier League fixtures.
