Just four games into the season, and Roberto De Zerbi will already regret Chelsea comments

The Blues are currently fourth in the Premier League table, which is where they want to be, with seven points. Tottenham, on the other hand, are just above the relegation zone after failing to win any of their first four fixtures.

In fact, Spurs have not even scored a goal yet. It makes some of Roberto De Zerbi’s recent comments truly laughable.

Last month, De Zerbi suggested that Tottenham would not need as much time as Chelsea under BlueCo to become a team capable of winning silverware.

“If you look at the Premier League in the last ten years, Chelsea, for example, they won the Club World Cup,” De Zerbi was quoted as saying by The Standard. “At the beginning, they spent [big money] for two or three seasons to become a team. I think we can do, for sure, faster.”

Chelsea were taken over by BlueCo, who are run by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, in 2022. They won their first two major honours three years later after success in the 2025 Conference League final and 2025 Club World Cup final.

That means De Zerbi needs to win a trophy before 2029 to do what BlueCo did quicker. This could come back to bite me, but that is not happening. With how things are going, De Zerbi may not even last that long.

As for Chelsea, they need to build on their Conference League and Club World Cup success, which they failed to do last season.

Their aim needs to be the Premier League and Champions League, although they are nowhere near that level right now. Let us not forget that Xabi Alonso’s side are not even in the Champions League at the moment!

But you can guarantee that Chelsea will win a trophy before Spurs do. De Zerbi was just far too quick with that statement.
