Emiliano Martinez has faced some criticism since joining Chelsea from Aston Villa, and some of it has been warranted.

For example, Martinez could have definitely done better for Kai Havertz’s goal in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal after being beaten at his near post.

However, the Blues’ defenders have not exactly helped the 34-year-old.

Chelsea fans, how do you feel about Enzo Fernandez’s exit after his bright display in the Manchester derby?

As per FBref, Chelsea have faced 26 shots on target in the Premier League this season. No team have dealt with more! For context, Arsenal have only faced nine shots on target.

Martinez only joined Chelsea after their first game of the campaign, so he did not have to face all 26 shots. Still, the goalkeeper will not be happy with the number of shots he is having to deal with.

It is his job to stop them. That is why the Argentine is getting paid by Chelsea. But there needs to be a limit to how much he faces each week.

All in all, Chelsea’s defending has not been up to scratch. Paul Merson was very critical of Jorrel Hato after his role in Hull City’s first goal against Chelsea at the weekend.

The midfield’s lack of control is definitely contributing. But some of the one-v-one defending from the likes of Hato and Malo Gusto has been very unconvincing.

Xabi Alonso has been using Gusto in midfield, but he played at right-back against Hull and was also at fault for their equaliser.
