Cole Palmer is not too happy after a decision was made for the Chelsea star to not join up with the England squad for the upcoming international break.

Palmer’s excellent start to the season at Stamford Bridge saw Thomas Tuchel bring him back into the England squad after leaving him out for when they travelled to the 2026 World Cup.

He was joined by best friend Morgan Rogers in the side, however withdrew from the international squad with the intention of managing his minutes in the early stages of this season.

Cole Palmer ‘very disappointed’ by Chelsea decision

Despite understanding the decision made by the club, Simon Phillips has revealed that the attacking midfielder has been left ‘very disappointed’ that he will not be allowed to represent his country.

He told his Substack: “Palmer was buzzing to be back in the England fold and had every intention of going to camp and giving it his all for these Nations League games.

“However, conversations with Chelsea’s medical staff and the fact that they are trying to monitor his overall fitness and the injuries he has suffered over the last two seasons, as well as muscle fatigue and ‘a slight knock’ as sources describe it, meant that they came to a collective decision that it would not be wise for Palmer to go on international duty, and the best course of action was more recovery and load management at Cobham.

“Palmer was very disappointed, but again, he understands the advice and has followed it. After all, the season is long and it is all about sustaining game time over a long course of time and being able to play as much as he can this season. He plans to play for England again and believes missing this international break will only help with that goal as well.”

How would you rate Xabi Alonso’s first weeks at Stamford Bridge?

What has worked, and what needs improving? 🤔

England are set to face Spain, Croatia and Czechia twice during the upcoming international break, getting their Nations League campaign underway.

Reece James and Levi Colwill will also remain at Cobham, with both of them still looking to get up to full fitness in this early stage of the season.

Chelsea will be well aware of the injury issues which plagued Palmer’s last 18 months, and will also be privy to the fact he looks back to his best right now.

It is their right to protect the talent they pay every single week, in order to not risk him missing any stage of the season in West London.

He is playing a key role in the attacking line which is keeping Xabi Alonso’s side in games at the minute, alongside Rogers and Joao Pedro, who has also withdrawn from the Brazil squad for this international break.
