He was meant to be Chelsea’s saviour, but summer signing has been underwhelming

Before dropping points against Brentford and Hull City, Chelsea fans were pretty pleased with how the summer transfer window went.

However, since the loss to Brentford and draw with Hull, supporters have been very critical of the club’s failure to sign a new midfielder and some of the players who did arrive at Stamford Bridge. Take Maxence Lacroix, for example.

Lacroix put in a solid display on his debut against Fulham, but his mobility and positioning have been questioned during Chelsea’s mini-slump (let’s hope it’s a mini-slump).

Lacroix is not the only Chelsea signing who has faced some criticism since joining the club, though.

Emiliano Martinez has underwhelmed so far

Expectations for Emiliano Martinez were high after he joined Chelsea from Aston Villa at the end of August. Unlike Lacroix, Robert Sanchez had a terrible game against Fulham, which proved to be the final nail in the coffin. The Spaniard was replaced by Martinez before moving to Como.

Martinez has not been a total disaster and has actually made some great saves in a Chelsea shirt. But after watching Sanchez cost the team so many points, we all painted the 34-year-old as our saviour, which, unfortunately, he has not been the case.

The first goal he conceded in the Blues’ 2-1 defeat to Arsenal was the kind of goal Sanchez has been crucified for letting in. Such a mistake is why Martinez has been an underwhelming signing thus far.

Going forward, Martinez cannot make too many more of those; otherwise, buying the Argentina international would have been pointless. Despite conceding three goals against Leeds United in the third round of the Carabao Cup, Mike Penders impressed. If Martinez is not careful, the Belgian youngster could end up taking his spot.

Chelsea’s tragic defending has done Martinez no favours, but it is still down to the former Villa man to improve and not get beaten at his near post like in the Arsenal defeat.
