If the latest reports are true, Pep Chavarria’s nightmare Chelsea scenario is taking shape
The transfer team at Chelsea never stops working, and right now, the Blues have identified two January targets from Premier League clubs. One would be a nightmare scenario for Pep Chavarria.
Xabi Alonso has already performed major surgery on Chelsea’s defence, bringing in Maxence Lacroix and Chavarria. Tosin Adarabioyo, Mamadou Sarr, Marc Cucurella, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi have left.
But Chelsea’s defence has not improved. Chelsea have already conceded a total of 15 goals in league and cup. Alonso needs to improve his defence, whether that is with his current players or new signings.
Chelsea consider moves for Khusanov and Mitchell
This week, Chelsea have been linked with signing two Premier League defenders. Abdukodir Khusanov is seen as an ambitious target, though if his lack of game time at Man City continues, a deal could happen.
Then, there is Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell, who looks much more likely to be on the move. The England defender is out of contract next summer, and Chelsea are battling Liverpool and Man United.

Mitchell move is a nightmare scenario for Chavarria
Chavarria has just got himself into Chelsea’s starting line-up, after Jorrel Hato made a horrendous mistake against Hull. Finally, Chavarria has the chance to establish himself in Alonso’s first eleven at Chelsea.
But before Chavarria even gets a few months in the starting line-up – if he even gets that, with Palestra set to return – he could be replaced. Mitchell would certainly come in as a replacement for the Spaniard.
Chavarria is no spring chicken, not in Chelsea terms. He will finish the season aged 29, and his chances of getting back in with Mitchell ahead of him are small. Signing Mitchell is Chavarria’s nightmare scenario.
Whether the Blues do make a move for Mitchell remains to be seen. Behdad Eghbali has a solid working relationship with Steve Parish after the two did deals for Lacroix, Axel Disasi and Honest Ahanor.
But having spent the entire summer to get Chavarria, for Chavarria to finally get into the starting line-up, the signing of Mitchell would be a hammer blow for the Spanish defender so soon into his Chelsea spell.
