‘Morgs wasn’t too happy’ – Jordan Henderson on his Chelsea free-kick against Bournemouth
Jordan Henderson gave a great glimpse into the banter behind his free-kick stunner against Bournemouth.
Making the most of a rare start at Stamford Bridge, Jordan Henderson was brilliant.
He set the tone in under 70 seconds with a clean finish from the edge of the box, then set up Morgan Rogers just a minute later. But the highlight came in the 70th minute when he talked Cole Palmer and Rogers into letting him step up, curling a stunning 25-yard free-kick into the top corner.
And at 36 years and 115 days, he became Chelsea’s oldest player to record three goal involvements in a Premier League match, which is some achievement for a so-called role player.

Jordan Henderson had a good laugh talking about his free-kick, giving full credit to Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers for stepping aside. He mentioned he’d been putting in extra work on set-pieces in training all week, so when the opportunity came up, he was glad his teammates trusted him to take it.
Talking after the match, he said: “I’ve been working on it in training for the last week or two. Morgs [Morgan Rogers] wasn’t too happy but then said ‘go on then’. Cole [Palmer] said ‘which corner are we celebrating in when you score?’. I’m thankful to Cole and Morgs for letting me take it. I’ve been pretty consistent with it in training.”
That playful banter shows exactly the kind of atmosphere built in this squad. For a 36-year-old veteran to step up and take set-pieces off the main guys takes genuine mutual respect, but Henderson earned it on the practice pitch.
He’s leading by example and giving the younger players a proper standard to follow, which is exactly what he was brought to the club to do. Only the goals weren’t so expected.
